1. The new law

The source from the ministry of culture.

1.1. What is it?

The danish “red” government has decided to modernise the old “blank-media” tax law. The goal is to generate 93.000.000,00 DKK or ~12.501.474,10 €, for the copyright holders.

The taxes will be realized on the following products:

  • Cd
  • Dvd/Blu-ray
  • Usb-drives
  • Memory cards
  • External hard drives
  • Network hard drives
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Laptop computers
  • Desktop computers

This is allegedly to alleviate the loss of profits for the copyrightholders due to piracy.

Yet no ammendments are made to the law then making it legal, so now every danish citizen will be paying these companies taxes with nothing in return. In fact, they will just involuntarily solidify the copyrightholders power.

In a time of streaming, this makes little sense.

Either way it is disgusting policy, obvious lobbyism, as in a country of alleged lowest corruption this is absurd.

And yes, from a mostly “socialist” government.

1.2. Who did this?

From the source:

Regeringen, Socialistisk Folkeparti,Radikale Venstre, Enhedslisten og Frie Grønne er enige om, at den danske blankmedieordning skal moderniseres i lyset af den teknologiske udvikling og danskernes privatkopieringsadfærd.

I’ll personally change how I vote next election, and contact the party I voted for to relay my deep concern for this law.

It is just another chip in the danish facade of an ideal society, of course one of the other prominent ones being the The Association Against Illegal Surveillance, or “With the state as your advesary”.
